120L vs 240L vs 660L Mobile Recycling Bins: Which Capacity Fits Your UAE Facility Layout?
Capacity
is decided by your building, not by your waste volume. A 660L bin holds the
most and costs the least per litre, but it will not fit through a standard
office doorway, will not go in a passenger lift, and cannot be moved safely by
one person when full. Choose 120L for corridors, offices and tight
back-of-house areas; 240L for kitchens, retail floors and mid-volume collection
points; and 660L for loading bays, production halls and consolidation areas
where a four-wheel bin has room to turn and the collection vehicle can reach
it.
The most common
specification error in UAE facilities is buying one capacity for the whole
site. It produces bins that will not fit where they are needed and bins that
are collected half empty. Sizing point by point takes longer once and works
permanently.
The three capacities and
where each belongs
120 litre — two-wheel
The smallest
standard mobile bin. Narrow enough to sit against a wall in a corridor without
obstructing it, light enough for one person to manoeuvre when full, and low
enough to pass under most counters and through standard doorways.

The
general-purpose size and the most widely deployed capacity across UAE
commercial and residential sites. It doubles the capacity of a 120L for a
modest increase in footprint, and it remains a two-wheel bin that one person
can tilt and roll.

A consolidation
container rather than a collection point. Four castors, a much larger
footprint, and a lid that is usually split or hinged in sections because a
single lid at this size is heavy to lift. It offers the lowest cost per litre
of storage and the lowest number of collection movements.

The five constraints that
decide the answer
1. Footprint and clearance
Mobile bins in
the GCC are generally manufactured to EN 840 dimensional standards, which is
what allows them to interface with standard collection vehicle lifting gear.
Typical footprints are approximately 480 mm wide for a 120L, approximately 580
mm wide for a 240L, and approximately 1,370 mm wide for a 660L four-wheel bin.
Depth and height increase correspondingly. Always confirm exact dimensions
against the product datasheet before finalising a layout, as designs vary
between manufacturers.
What to measure
on site before ordering:

The narrowest doorway on
the route from the bin position to the collection point.
●
Corridor width, allowing
for the bin to pass without blocking a fire escape route.
●
Lift car internal
dimensions and door width, if the bin must change floors.
●
Turning space at corners —
a four-wheel 660L needs materially more than a two-wheel bin.
●
Ramp gradients and
threshold steps on the route.
●
The bin room or bay
footprint, allowing for the lid to open fully.
A 660L bin will
not pass through a standard single-leaf door and will not fit a typical
passenger lift. If either is on the route, the capacity decision is already
made.
2. Weight when full
Capacity is a
volume figure, but staff handle a weight. The loaded weight depends entirely on
what goes in — a 240L bin of loose cardboard and PET is light, while the same
bin filled with wet food waste, glass or construction debris is not.
The practical
rule is that a two-wheel bin is designed to be tilted and rolled by one person,
and a four-wheel 660L is not. If dense waste is going into a large bin, either
restrict the fill level, split the stream across smaller bins, or plan for
two-person movement. This is a manual handling and HSE issue, not just a
comfort question.
3. Lift and collection compatibility
The bin must
match the lifting mechanism on the collection vehicle serving the site.
Two-wheel bins normally use a comb lift, engaging a moulded lip on the front of
the bin. Four-wheel bins normally use trunnion pins or a comb bar, depending on
the design and the vehicle.
Confirm with
your waste contractor which mechanism their vehicles use before ordering. A bin
that cannot be lifted by the vehicle serving your site has to be emptied
manually, which defeats the purpose of a mobile bin entirely.
4. Collection frequency and fill rate
Capacity and
collection frequency are two settings on the same dial. A larger bin reduces
collection movements; a smaller bin collected more often keeps waste from
sitting, which matters in UAE ambient temperatures where organic waste degrades
quickly.
Size so that
the bin is emptied close to full but before overflow. Two failure patterns to
avoid:

Undersized bins
overflow, waste is stacked beside the bin, segregation breaks down and the area
fails inspection.

Oversized bins are
collected half empty, which wastes collection cost, and organic content sits
longer, which creates odour and pest problems in summer.
Where organic
or food waste is involved, frequency should take priority over capacity. A
smaller bin emptied daily is better than a large one emptied twice a week.
5. Number of streams at the point of use
Segregation
requires one bin per stream at the point where waste is generated. Three
streams in a corridor means three bins side by side, so the width available is
divided three ways. This is the reason 120L bins are common in multi-stream
office deployments — the constraint is total run length, not individual
capacity.
At
consolidation points the logic reverses. Streams have already been separated,
so each 660L bin holds a single stream and capacity is the priority.
A practical sizing method
1.
Map the generation
points. Where is waste actually produced? Not where the bins currently sit.
2.
Identify the streams
at each point. A workshop may need only two; a food court may need four.
3.
Measure the route.
Narrowest door, corridor width, lift dimensions, turning space, thresholds.
This eliminates capacities before you consider volume.
4.
Estimate fill rate
per stream per day. Use a week of observation rather than an assumption.
5.
Set the target
collection frequency. Daily for organics, less frequent for dry
recyclables.
6.
Divide fill rate by
frequency to get required capacity per point, then round up to the nearest
standard size the route allows.
7.
Confirm lift
compatibility with the waste contractor.
8.
Check loaded weight
against who has to move the bin, and how far.

A well-designed
site rarely standardises on one capacity. A common pattern across UAE
commercial buildings:

120L at floor level
in office corridors and lift lobbies, in multi-stream sets.

240L in kitchens,
retail back-of-house, and as the collection point on each floor or zone.

660L in the
ground-floor bin room or loading bay, one per stream, emptied directly by the
collection vehicle.
Waste flows
upward in capacity as it moves toward the collection point. Bins at the point
of generation are sized for the space; bins at the consolidation point are
sized for the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions
Will a 660L bin fit through a standard doorway?
No. A 660L
four-wheel bin is significantly wider than a standard single-leaf door and will
not pass through it, nor will it fit a typical passenger lift. If the bin has
to travel through internal doors, choose a two-wheel 120L or 240L instead.
Can one person move a full 660L bin?
It depends on
the waste density and the floor surface, but as a rule it should not be
assumed. Four-wheel bins are designed to be pushed on level, smooth ground, and
a bin filled with dense waste can exceed safe single-person handling limits.
Plan for two-person movement or restrict the fill level.
Are UAE mobile bins made to a standard size?
Most mobile

What capacity should be used for food waste in UAE
conditions?
Generally the
smallest capacity that can hold one day's volume, emptied daily. In UAE ambient
temperatures organic waste degrades quickly, so collection frequency matters
more than capacity. Specify a sealed lid, a foot pedal, and a drain plug so the
bin can be washed out.
Can bin capacities be mixed across one site?
Yes, and most
well-designed facilities do exactly that. Size each point for its own
constraints — space at the point of generation, volume at the consolidation
